Freely

No connection needed

A to-do list that works offline and catches up by itself.

Freely keeps a copy of your tasks on each device, so it opens without a connection. What you change waits on the device and is sent, in the order you made it, as soon as you're back online.

  • Opens with no connection
  • Changes sent in order
  • Nothing to set up

Upcoming

☁️ Offline · 2 waiting

Does Freely work offline?

Yes. Freely is a free to-do list that keeps a copy of your tasks, lists, notes and habits on each device you sign in on, so it opens and works without a connection. Everything you change while offline is kept on the device and sent, in order, when the connection returns; your other devices then catch up.

When the connection drops

Three moments, one small pill

A pill at the top of the screen tells you what's going on. When there is nothing to say, it isn't there.

  1. ☁️ Offline · 2 waiting

    You're offline

Keep going: add, tick, edit, move and delete tasks as usual. Each change is saved on the device at once and counted in the pill.

  2. ⟳ Syncing · 2 waiting

    You're back

Freely sends what waited, in the order you made it. A task made and then deleted while offline sends nothing at all.

  3. No pill

    Everything is sent

The pill goes away, and your phone and your laptop show the same thing again. Nothing for you to press at any point.

Offline, in detail

What works offline, and what needs a connection

Works offline

  • Opening Freely, once it has opened online on that device
  • Adding, ticking, editing, moving and deleting tasks (a delete still offers Undo)
  • My Day, Upcoming, the Calendar and the Priority Matrix
  • Notes, habits and lists, saved as soon as you're back
  • Typing tasks in plain words: the reading happens on the device

Needs a connection

  • The first visit on each device and browser, and signing in
  • Signing out: offline, Freely says it needs a connection
  • Starting, changing or ending a share
  • Messages and team chats
  • Opening photos and files attached to tasks
  • Seeing what other people, or your other devices, changed meanwhile

Under the hood

How Freely keeps every change

Task changes go through a queue on the device. These are its rules.

In the order you made them

Changes go out one after another, so an edit never arrives before the task it edits.

Kept through a reload

Waiting changes stay on the device when you reload, close the tab or close the app, and go out next time Freely is open with a connection.

Retried patiently

A change that can't get through is tried again after 15 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute, two, four, and then every five minutes, for as long as it takes.

Refusals are shown

A change is let go only when the server refuses it for good, for example because you can no longer edit that list, and then the screen says so.

Merged, not overwritten

When two devices changed the same task, your change wins where you made it and the other's wins elsewhere. Notes, habits and lists merge field by field, and habit check-ins day by day.

One account per device copy

The copy on a device belongs to one account. Signing in as someone else starts clean, and signing out removes the copy from the device.

Step by step

How to use Freely offline

There is no offline mode to switch on. These are the only steps.

  1. Open Freely once, online

On the phone or laptop you'll use, open freelytodo.com/app while connected. From then on your browser keeps Freely and your tasks on that device. The phone and desktop apps, now being prepared, carry Freely inside them.

  2. Put it on your home screen, if you like

In your browser's menu, choose Add to Home Screen or Install. Freely then opens from its own icon, like an app. This step is optional.

  3. Use it as usual

With no connection, the pill at the top says ☁️ Offline and counts what's waiting. Nothing else changes.

  4. Come back online

Freely sends everything by itself, in order, and the pill disappears once it's done.

Honest limits

Worth knowing before you go offline

  • Each device needs one online visit first. A browser that has never opened Freely can't open it offline.
  • Other people's changes wait too. What someone changed in a shared list reaches you once you're back online.
  • Reminders on the website need an open tab. They appear while Freely is open, with or without a connection, and not once the tab is closed.

Questions

Working offline: questions

Do I need to install anything to use Freely offline?

No. Open Freely once in your browser while online, and it opens offline on that device from then on. Adding it to your home screen is optional.

What if I change the same task on two devices while offline?

Both changes count. Freely merges them against the copy the server last confirmed, so what you changed on one device is kept, and what you changed on the other is kept too, where they touched different things.

Is a copy of my tasks kept on the device?

Yes, so that Freely can open without a connection. The copy belongs to your account alone and is removed from the device when you sign out.

Can I have Freely open in several tabs?

Yes. The open tabs on one device share a single queue of waiting changes and take turns sending it, and a tab that closes mid-way leaves its changes for the others.

Open it once, use it anywhere

Open Freely while you're connected, and it's ready for the next tunnel, flight or dead zone.

Your data never passes through the offline helper: it only keeps the pages and their files.
