Short answers
Questions about Freely, answered.
Short, direct answers about Freely, the free to-do list and daily planner. Each one starts with the answer; the pages linked under each topic go further.
Getting started
Is Freely free?
Yes. Freely costs nothing to use on the website: there is no card to enter and there are no ads. You sign up with your e-mail address.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Freely runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, at freelytodo.com/app. If you like, add it to your home screen from the browser's menu, and it opens from its own icon like an app.
How do I sign up?
Open Freely and sign up with your e-mail address and a password. The sign-in service first sends a mail to confirm it. After that, the same tasks are on every device you sign in on.
Is there an app for iPhone, Android or desktop?
The iPhone, Android and desktop apps are being prepared. Today Freely runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop, with nothing to install, and the apps will open the same account and the same tasks.
Who is Freely for?
Anyone who wants one calm place for tasks, a plan for today, habits and notes; who uses a phone most of the time and a laptop some of the time; and who shares a few lists with family, friends or a small team.
Adding and planning
How does Freely understand dates in plain words?
It reads the day, the time, an end time and a repeat straight from the sentence you type: “call the dentist tomorrow 3pm”, “team meeting friday 4pm to 5:30pm”, “pay rent on the 1st of every month”. Typos in date words are forgiven, and words that only look like dates, such as “sun cream” or “2nd draft”, stay in the title.
What does Date TBD mean?
It means no date yet. Type “tbd” in a task, or add one in Upcoming without a day, and it waits at the bottom of Upcoming, never overdue, until you give it a date.
How do repeating tasks work?
Type the repeat with the task, such as “water the plants every other day”. When you tick it off, the next one appears, counted from its due date and always ahead of today, so a late tick never leaves an overdue copy.
What is My Day?
My Day is today's plan: a short list you choose, split into morning, afternoon and evening. Each morning My Day clears what you finished; anything unfinished stays, in the same part, and a banner lets you undo that.
Does Freely send reminders?
Yes, for any task with a time. On the website the reminder appears inside Freely while it is open. The phone apps, still being prepared, will show it as a phone notification even when Freely is closed. No reminder is ever sent by e-mail.
Sharing
Can I share a list without letting people change it?
Yes. Every share is View only unless you choose Edit & add or + delete, and you can give it an end date so it stops on its own. You can share a list, a single task or your whole Upcoming, and the database enforces those rights, not only the screen.
What can someone do with Edit & add or + delete?
With Edit & add they can tick, edit and add tasks; with + delete they can also delete them. Only you, the owner, can start, change or end the share, and they can leave it whenever they like.
Can I give someone one task without sharing the whole list?
Yes, in two ways. Share just that task from its details, and it turns up under Shared tasks for them. Or assign it to them, and it appears in their Assigned to me, even from a list that isn't shared.
Can I use Freely with a team?
Yes. Make a team in Settings → Teams. Teammates can message each other and be assigned work as one, and a guest can assign work to the team without reading its chat.
Offline and sync
Does Freely work offline?
Yes. Once Freely has opened online on a device, it opens there without a connection too, with your tasks. Changes wait on the device and are sent in order when the connection returns.
Do my phone and my laptop stay in sync?
Yes. Sign in on both and the same tasks, lists, notes and habits are on each. Changes reach your other devices within moments when both are online, and catch up later when one wasn't.
Privacy and your data
Does Freely show ads or track me?
No. Freely has no ads and no analytics or tracking scripts, and it never sells or shares your data. The database itself checks every request, so only you and the people you share or assign tasks to can read them.
Where is my data stored?
In a Supabase database, a hosted Postgres protected by row-level security, plus a copy on each device you sign in on, so Freely can open offline. The privacy page has the details.
What happens if I delete something by mistake?
Deleting a task offers Undo, and deleted tasks wait in Recently deleted for 30 days on every device, where Restore puts them back. Ticked something by mistake? Tap it again. A deleted list waits there too, but only on the device you deleted it on.
Can I take my data with me?
Yes. Back up, in Settings, downloads your tasks, lists, notes and habits as one file, any time; Restore brings one back in without making copies.
Can I delete my account?
Not yet. A Delete account button is coming to Settings; when it arrives, everything of yours goes at once.
Everything else
Is Freely available in other languages?
Not yet. Freely's screens are in English and it reads date words in English; the tasks themselves can be written in any language.
Can I import tasks from another app?
Not yet. Freely restores its own backups from Settings, but it doesn't read files made by other apps.
How do I get help?
Open Settings in Freely and tap 📖 How Freely works at the top, or the How it all works link under a list. The support page on this site answers the common questions too.
