Freely

No date pickers

A to-do list that understands plain words.

Type “call the plumber tomorrow at 9” and Freely files it for tomorrow at 9:00 AM. The day, the time, an end time, the repeat and the list all come out of the sentence, so there is no date picker to fill in.

Upcoming

Freely reads Book club Tuesday 7:00 PM Every 2 weeks Personal

Every sentence here is read by Freely's own reader, right in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

In short

Freely is a free to-do list that reads plain words. You type a task the way you'd say it, and Freely takes the day, the time, an end time, a repeat and a list name out of the sentence, so “pay the electricity bill on the 15th” lands on the 15th, in your Finance list. Typos in date words are forgiven, and words that only look like dates stay in the title.

What it reads

Six things Freely takes out of a sentence

Each example shows what Freely files when you type it into Upcoming. The words it used leave the title; everything else stays as you wrote it.

Days

Today, tomorrow and the weekdays, “in 2 days”, “this weekend”, a date such as “sept 30” or “9/17”, and “the 17th”.

  • Submit the report by friday

    Submit the report Friday Work

  • Call grandma sunday

    Call grandma Sunday Personal

Times

A clock with or without am or pm, “noon”, “tonight”, and words such as morning and evening. A bare hour is read the way people mean it: “dinner at 8” is 8:00 PM, “breakfast at 8” is 8:00 AM.

  • Movie tonight at 9

    Movie Today 9:00 PM Personal

  • Pick up the kids at 3:15

Pick up the kids Today 3:15 PM Personal

Start and end times

Write a range and both ends are kept: “4pm to 5:30pm”, “6-7am”. A range never ends before it starts, and it runs past midnight only when you write it that way.

  • Yoga 6-7am

Yoga Today 6:00 AM until 7:00 AM Health

  • Drinks 10pm-2am

Drinks Today 10:00 PM until 2:00 AM Personal

Repeats

Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, every few days or weeks, “every other tuesday”, sets of weekdays such as “every mon and wed”, a day of the month, and the month's last day.

  • Take out the bins every monday

Take out the bins Monday Weekly Personal

  • Send invoices every 15th of the month

Send invoices 15th of the month Monthly Finance

Lists

Put a list's name in the sentence and the task is filed there: “work call the bank” goes to Work as “call the bank”. Without one, Freely guesses the list from the words, and you can move it any time.

  • Renew the car insurance friday

Renew the car insurance Friday Finance

Typos

Misspelled date words are corrected before they're read, so a hurried “tommorow” or “wensday” still lands where you meant.

  • Dentist wensday 4pm

    Dentist Wednesday 4:00 PM Health

Step by step

How to add a task in plain words

It works in every add box in Freely, and the box you use fills in the rest.

  1. Pick where it goes

Type into any add box: My Day, Upcoming, a list, a box of the Priority Matrix or a day on the Calendar. A task added in My Day is in My Day; one added on a Calendar day is on that day.

  2. Say it in one go

Put the day, the time, the repeat and the list anywhere in the sentence: “every monday take out the bins” works as well as the other way round.

  3. Press Enter

The task lands with its date, time and repeat already set, and the date words leave the title. With no day and no time at all, a task added in Upcoming waits under Date TBD, and one added in a list simply has no date.

  4. Check it, change it

Tap the task to open its details. Retype the title with another day and it is read again as you type, or use the date box and the quick buttons: Today, Tmrw, +1wk, TBD and Clear.

List

Personal

Typed as “book club every other tuesday at 7pm”: one sentence, and the day, the time, the repeat and the list are filled in.

Paste an event, and it sorts itself out

Copy an event from an e-mail or a web page and paste it into the add box. Labels such as When:, Date:, Time: and Where: are read for what they are: the date and the time go on the task, the event's name becomes its title, and the rest goes into the task's notes.

  • An event that runs over several days keeps its last day in the notes
  • A time zone after the time is not converted: the time is read as your own clock's

How Freely decides

A few rules settle the sentences that could mean two things. They're the same on every device.

Morning or evening?

A bare 1 to 7 is the afternoon or evening, 8 to 11 the morning, unless a word near the clock decides: “call mom at 8 tonight” is 8:00 PM. Writing am or pm always wins.

Minutes without am or pm

A time with minutes, such as “pick up kids 3:15”, is the afternoon. Written the 24-hour way with a leading zero, “wake 04:30” stays early in the morning.

A date that has passed

A month and day without a year that has already gone by this year means next year, so a birthday typed in December for January lands in the right year.

A repeat with no day

It starts today, or on the first weekday it names. When you tick it off, the next one is counted from its due date and is always ahead of today, so a late tick never leaves an overdue copy.

No date yet

Type “tbd” and the task waits under Date TBD at the bottom of Upcoming. It is never overdue, and it moves up as soon as you give it a day.

Steps and notes too

A step inside a task can carry its own date and time, typed the same way, and a date written in a note linked to a task moves that task to the date.

Honest limits

What it leaves alone, and what it can't read yet

When Freely isn't sure, it keeps your words rather than guess. Words that only look like dates, such as “march the band”, “version 2.10” or “1/2 gallon”, stay in the title.

  • Buy sun cream

Buy sun cream Date TBD Personal

  • Meet on the 3rd floor

Meet on the 3rd floor Date TBD Personal

  • English only. Date words are read in English. A task can be written in any language, but its dates won't be picked out.
  • A few repeats stay as words. “every 2nd tuesday” and “every last friday” are kept whole in the title instead of being guessed wrong.
  • Dates the calendar doesn't have stay in the title. “sep 31” is not a date, so nothing is moved.
  • A lone “by midnight” isn't read yet. Write a time such as 11:59pm, or set the time in the task's details.
  • Time zones aren't converted. 6:30 pm EDT is read as 6:30 PM on your own clock.

Questions

Typing tasks in plain words: questions

Can I still pick a date by hand?

Yes. Every task's details have a date box and quick buttons for today, tomorrow, a week from now and Date TBD, and on the Calendar you can drag a task onto another day.

What if Freely reads a date I didn't mean?

Open the task and change it: pick another day, or tap Clear to remove the date. Words that only look like dates, such as “3rd floor” or “2nd draft”, are left in the title to begin with.

Does Freely read dates in other languages?

Not yet. Freely reads date words in English. Tasks written in other languages are saved as they are, without their dates being picked out.

Is what I type into the demo on this page sent anywhere?

No. The demo runs Freely's own reader inside your browser and forgets everything when you leave the page. In Freely itself, your tasks are saved to your account and synced to your devices.
